Designed for NGSS
Standards-based instruction can be frustrating, but it is a necessary part of planning, teaching, and assessing. Rather than spend countless hours sifting through standards and ensuring every part of your lesson plan aligns with standards, we’ve done the work for you. All of TCI’s curriculum programs are designed for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Oklahoma state science standards. We even provide you with a list of all NGSS correlations for each unit in our science curriculum programs so that you can see the exact standards you’re looking for and the specific lessons they’re included in.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
New science units bring new concepts and information, so we begin each new unit with anchoring phenomena. This helps students focus on the goal of the unit, and improves retention and understanding of what they’re learning.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Each lesson has its own phenomena to help students understand more intricate concepts that relate to the unit-level anchoring phenomena.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
NGSS has established three dimensions of science learning to keep foundational skills and diverse scientific knowledge at the forefront of science education. The three dimensions are crosscutting concepts, disciplinary core ideas, and science and engineering practices, and are designed to help students make connections across various scientific fields, learn foundational skills that apply to all scientific disciplines, and explore real-life scientific opportunities.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Engineering challenges bring real-world opportunities to your students to explore what real scientists do in a hands-on way. These challenges encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as teamwork and collaboration.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Assessments are a necessary part of science education, but they can be challenging to create in an effective and helpful way. Our lesson-level assessments are ready-made, and you can use them in any way you choose. As with all other parts of our curriculum, Oklahoma science standards and NGSS are integrated into each lesson-level assessment.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Written responses are not always an effective gauge of understanding, particularly in science. Performance assessments are an important part of science education as they give students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and application of a concept or skill.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

Our Bring Science Alive! programs were created to engage your students fully throughout every step of their science education. Elementary school science curriculum focuses on foundational skills and knowledge for younger scientists to establish a love of science from an early age. Middle school science curriculum teaches earth, life, and physical science while constantly building on the foundational skills and baseline knowledge that students already have. All programs are, of course, based on Oklahoma science standards and NGSS.
