Designed for NGSS
Everyone who has any experience teaching science knows that the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the foundation for all science learning in the state of Iowa. Our elementary and middle school science curriculum programs seamlessly integrate the Iowa science standards and NGSS into each aspect of our curriculum. This makes every part of your job simpler since you no longer have to comb through standards and apply them to everything you do in your classroom. All of our ready-to-use lessons, presentations, assignments, activities, and assessments are in line with NGSS and the Iowa science standards, and we even supply you with NGSS correlations so you can cross-reference and notate where each standard is being applied.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Each unit of TCI’s science curriculum will begin with anchoring phenomena. This helps students refer back to the main idea and the big question for each unit, allowing them flexibility in their understanding and application of the material.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Within each lesson, we also include other phenomena to break down the larger question from the unit into smaller, more manageable ideas. This method of teaching science has shown to be effective when it comes to student engagement, understanding, retention, and application of key concepts.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
NGSS has established three dimensions of science learning to keep foundational skills and diverse scientific knowledge at the forefront of science education. The three dimensions are crosscutting concepts, disciplinary core ideas, and science and engineering practices, and are designed to help students make connections across various scientific fields, learn foundational skills that apply to all scientific disciplines, and explore real-life scientific opportunities.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Scientists of all ages tend to love the hands-on experimentation that happens in the classroom, so we’ve fully embraced this excitement and encourage a number of engineering challenges when teaching science. Our middle school and elementary science curriculum programs all include challenges that encourage teamwork, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
It’s important to check your students’ understanding multiple times throughout a unit to ensure they are retaining what you’re teaching. Our customizable assessments make it easy to assess lesson-level understanding so that you can revisit anything before a larger exam or standardized test.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
NGSS and Iowa science standards agree that demonstration of understanding is a key part of science learning. Our elementary and middle school science curriculum programs include performance assessments that you can alter or use however you see fit.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

Our elementary science curriculum is all about teaching kids the foundational knowledge they need to succeed in their future science classes and eventually even a career in a scientific field. Our Bring Science Alive! programs are engaging, exciting, and interesting to students of all ages, and they are in perfect compliance with all Iowa science standards and NGSS. Our middle school science curriculum is, of course, also in line with all required standards, but it takes scientific concepts to a whole new level. For middle school students to learn, retain, and understand the material they learn in their science classes, they need to actively participate in lessons, activities, and more, and TCI’s middle school science curriculum encourages just that. Iowa middle school students will go through life science, earth science, and physical science, all the while building on key concepts and foundational scientific knowledge.
