The Next Generation Science Standards set the tone for science standards and science curriculum in Nevada. We’ve created the most interactive and engaging lesson plans and activities for you to use in your classroom, and every single one is integrated with NGSS and aligned with Nevada science standards. Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
We want our students to do more than just recite facts back to us. We want them to truly grasp and understand the concepts they learn from our science curriculum. This is why we begin each unit with an anchoring phenomenon so that they can continuously take small details and compare them to the main idea of the unit. Each lesson follows the unit storyline and ties back to the anchoring phenomena. This allows for a more thorough and complete understanding that everyone teaching science hopes for in their students
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Elementary science curriculum programs delve further into the big idea by presenting students with lesson-level phenomena. Our middle school science curriculum does this as well, encouraging students to make connections across everything they’re learning in science and relating it to their other lessons and the world around them.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
In order to ensure congruency across all Nevada science standards and science curriculum programs, NGSS has created the three dimensions of science learning. These cover all the important factors of teaching science so that your students are not only mastering the Nevada science standards, but they are also making connections between the various fields of science and the real world outside of the classroom. Disciplinary core ideas are considered the most important and broad concepts that apply to a specific scientific discipline. Crosscutting concepts are scientific ideas that are relevant in all fields of science. Finally, engineering practices are the specific investigations and observations that scientists make within their fields, which allow students to see what real scientists do and how concepts are established and further explored.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Even the most seemingly disinterested students tend to love doing science experiments. Our science curriculum has engineering challenges integrated through all levels of science, allowing your students to gain hands-on experience exploring scientific concepts come to life. Both our middle school and elementary science curriculum programs have age-appropriate engineering challenges throughout the coursework, and they teach students important skills like collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking, and more.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Assessments are an important part of any science curriculum, and ours comes with lesson-level assessments so you can gauge your students’ comprehension at any point throughout a unit. These are all customizable so that you can tailor them to your specific class and students.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Being able to demonstrate understanding is a key component in science curriculum programs. Our performance assessments are embedded in our elementary and middle school science curriculum for your easy access and simple Nevada science standards integration.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

Our elementary science curriculum aims to give students a foundational knowledge of scientific concepts, as well as a love of science and science learning. Our middle school science curriculum expands on foundational science knowledge that was learned in elementary school, and it introduces the main ideas behind physical, life, and earth science.
