Built by Teachers, For Teachers

Active learning and high-quality curriculum have always been at the heart of TCI. For more than thirty-five years, the mission is the same — and it keeps getting better.

Our Story

TCI (Teachers' Curriculum Institute) was founded in 1989 by Stanford-trained educators who believed social studies could be the most engaging subject in school, if it was taught the right way.

They started with a simple conviction: students learn best when they're actively doing something — investigating, debating, collaborating, and building understanding through experience. That conviction became the TCI Approach, a research-based instructional framework built around six teaching strategies that turn every lesson into a hands-on event. It was a different way to think about curriculum. It still shapes everything we make.

For more than 35 years, TCI has been translating that approach into programs teachers can actually use: ready-to-teach curriculum with the materials, support, and structure to let the approach do its work. Social studies, then science, with professional development built right in.

Today, students who begin in a TCI classroom arrive in each new grade ready to go deeper. Teachers spend less time reteaching and more time on the work that matters.

Our Teaching Philosophy

TCI's instructional philosophy — the TCI Approach — puts structured active learning at the center of every lesson. Students don't just encounter content; they investigate it, argue about it, and make sense of it together. Six research-based teaching strategies shape how lessons are designed and how understanding gets built: Visual Discovery, Response Group, Experiential Exercise, Skill Builder, Writing for Understanding, and Problem Solving Groupwork. Each one is designed to move students from passive reception to active construction of knowledge. The result is learning that sticks.

Why TCI?

Active Learning at the Core

Every lesson is built on the TCI Approach — a research-based framework that engages students through discussion, investigation, collaborative problem-solving, and writing. Students don't just cover content. They work with it. That's what builds durable skills alongside knowledge, in every lesson, across every grade.

Built for Every Learner

TCI reaches all students through immersive experiences, multiple modalities, and built-in differentiation — so every student can access the same lesson and learn it well. Same classroom. Same lesson. Every student in.

Supported from Day One

A strong program is only as good as its implementation. TCI stays present from the first training to ongoing adoption with professional development, teacher instruction videos, and reporting tools that help districts see what's working.
