Designed for NGSS
Making sure your students are truly learning is a key factor in science education. Not only do they have to understand the concepts, but they also have to be able to demonstrate them on tests. Our curriculum was designed for NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards), meaning that everything your students are learning is state-mandated and will help them succeed in their next grade, their next school, and beyond. We’ve even included the NGSS correlations right on our website so that you can see the specific standards and where we’ve integrated them into our curriculum.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Anchoring phenomena are presented at the start of each unit. These help students concentrate on the main ideas and goals of each unit to best master Missouri state science standards set forth by NGSS.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Investigative phenomenon also begin individual lessons, giving students ample opportunity to understand and master key concepts within each lesson, chapter, and unit.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Since Missouri state science standards are in line with NGSS, the standards include the three dimensions of science learning. These were established by NGSS, and are key ideas that are applicable in all fields of science. Crosscutting concepts, disciplinary core ideas, and science and engineering practices make up the three dimensions, and they each aim to help students make connections between scientific disciplines.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Hands-on activities in the classroom are a key part of students understanding and mastering scientific concepts. Engineering challenges encourage students to think creatively and critically, and require students to problem solve real-life situations while working collaboratively.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
At the end of each lesson, we’ve given you lesson-level assessments to more effectively gauge your students’ understanding of science material. Missouri state science standards are included in each of these assessments, and you are free to use them however you wish.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Demonstrating an understanding of concepts is an important part of science education. Performance assessments are a good way to explore your students’ abilities by having them apply what they’ve learned to display their mastery over the Next Generation Science Standards that you’ve taught.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

Our Bring Science Alive! programs are designed for specific grade levels in order to meet students right where they are with their current scientific knowledge. Our elementary school science curriculum aims to teach foundational knowledge and basic science skills to students so they can continue to build on that knowledge as they progress in school. Our middle school science curriculum programs are also grade-specific, covering life, physical, and earth science and their related concepts.
