Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) set the standard for curriculum in all grade levels, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. All science curriculum packages from TCI are aligned with NGSS so that your planning and testing are both streamlined and incredibly effective. You can see which questions on an exam, which concepts within a chapter, and which section within a unit focus on which standard. Explaining Phenomena Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Designing Solutions Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Essential questions begin each unit and chapter to keep your students focused on the goal and the big picture of each concept. This can be referenced at any time and will keep students anchored in achieving the goal of mastering a scientific concept.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Students are constantly encouraged to connect what they’re learning in class to the real world. Investigative phenomena within each lesson will help them think outside the classroom walls and the textbook applications to understand how concepts work and apply to real life situations.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
The three dimensions of science learning, established by NGSS, are the foundation of all of our curriculum programs. This ensures that not only are students mastering the standards set forth by NGSS, but they are also investigating concepts with a three-dimensional approach to ensure complete learning and understanding. Crosscutting concepts, science and engineering practices, and disciplinary core ideas are the dimensions that we utilize in each lesson to help students stay engaged and learn well.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
One of the students’ favorite parts of all TCI science curriculum programs is the engineering challenges. These allow students to take a hands-on approach to their learning by utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills to solve a problem or come up with a solution to a problem.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Within each lesson, we’ve created lesson-level assessments to allow you to test your students’ understanding of the material that you’ve presented. These assessments are fully customizable, and you can use them in whatever way you wish—as a review, as a quiz, as a test, or simply as a way to gauge what your students have retained. Each lesson-level assessment is in line with Massachusetts standards and with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the new state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Although many teachers and students alike dislike performance assessments, they are a necessary part of education and, we believe, a beneficial part. We’ve designed our performance assessments to help you understand how much your students comprehend and how well they’re grasping core concepts. These assessments determine how thoroughly students meet the standards set forth by NGSS for Massachusetts, and they can all be customized to your specific needs.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.
