Designed for NGSS
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the baseline for all science curriculum across Florida. Rather than make you sift through standards handbooks and cross-reference standards with your lessons and assessments, we’ve done the work for you. All of our curriculum programs are designed for NGSS to ensure your Florida state science standards are met with ease in every activity, presentation, and assessment you utilize in class. To make it even easier for you, we’ve included the NGSS correlations online so you can see which standards are covered in each unit.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
In order to keep students focused on the main goal of a unit, we’ve created anchoring phenomena to begin each one. When students know what the main idea is behind a unit, they are more likely to remain focused and retain the information being presented.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Lesson-level phenomena take the anchoring phenomena from the units and break them down into smaller, lesson-based phenomena. These more specific concepts make the anchoring phenomena more manageable and increase students’ understanding on multiple levels.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Since TCI’s science curriculum is based on NGSS and Florida science standards, we utilize the three dimensions of science learning in each program that we’ve designed. This three-dimensional approach to science helps students explore a variety of scientific fields and gain access to a great deal of foundational skills that apply to several scientific disciplines. The first dimension of science learning is crosscutting concepts, which helps students make connections between different scientific fields. The second dimension is disciplinary core ideas, which teaches students about key concepts and scientific knowledge that applies to all fields of science. The final dimension is science and engineering practices, which gives students access to real-life experiences and hands-on learning that stem directly from what real scientists do every day.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Our engineering challenges are usually the students’ favorite part of our curriculum. These are opportunities for students to get involved and hands-on in their learning. Students will utilize teamwork and collaboration, all the while fostering growth in scientists of all ages.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Our lesson-level assessments are an opportunity to test students’ knowledge, take into account all Florida state science standards and NGSS. You can use them however you wish to see where your students are at with their learning.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the state test format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Demonstration of skills is an important part of learning science, and our performance assessments allow students to show what they’ve learned.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.
