Geography Alive!

Maryland 7th Grade

Movement, trade, and power redraw the map. Students follow people, goods, and ideas across continents, ask who gets to define a place, and turn geographic thinking on the history of the Americas. This is the second year of a two-year course that begins with Geography Alive! Maryland 7th Grade.

What Students Will Explore

Unit 5

Movement of Humans

Human movement drives change, from the expansion of the Muslim world to Mongol conquest. Students weigh whether territorial expansion strengthens or weakens cultural exchange, how the borders drawn at the Partition of India shaped lives, and whether migration is inevitable.

Unit 6

Human Systems - Economic Systems

Economic systems connect people and divide them. Students ask whether trade is worth it, how capitalism and centrally planned economies each brought people together and pushed them apart, and whether globalization is good for everyone.

Unit 7

Place and Region

Place and region turn on power: who holds it, and how geography shapes it. Students consider whether where you live determines how you live, how geography influenced power under the Tokugawa Shogunate, how apartheid manipulated place, and who gets to define the Middle East.

Unit 8

Regional Case Study of Geographic Thinking

The Americas close the program as a case study in geographic thinking. Students examine how cultural ideas change or disappear, how culture was created, preserved, and destroyed in the transatlantic slave trade, what drives conflict and cooperation between groups, and who American Indians are today.
