LESSON
Maryland 6th Grade
Geography is a way of asking questions about people. Students use it to explain why complex societies emerged, how power is won and lost, and how ideas and diseases travel across the globe. This is the first year of a two-year course that continues in Geography Alive! Maryland 6th Grade.

What Students Will Explore
Unit 1
Geographic Thinking
Geographic thinking opens with why Earth and the people on it are worth studying, and whether a map can accurately define a place. Students look at why people move, who the people of the United States are, and why the environment is a complex issue.
Unit 2
Human Interaction with the Environment
Human interaction with the environment runs from the Neolithic Revolution and the first river valley civilizations to the present. Students weigh whether industrialization and urbanization are good for everyone, how revolutionary the Green Revolution was, and how climate change forces people to live differently.
Unit 3
Human Systems - Political Structures
Political structures center on how power is lost and gained, starting with early state formation. Students consider whether theocracies created stability, how effective democratic revolutions were at achieving their goals, and whether authoritarian regimes can survive in the 21st century.
Unit 4
Movement of Pathogens and Ideas
Ideas and disease both travel, and this unit follows how religious systems spread and how empires decline when ideas move. Students examine whether the bubonic plague brought people together and whether human systems can prevent the movement of disease. Pacific Islands and Antarctica.
