Civics Alive! Foundations and Functions
Civics Alive!

Foundations and Functions

Students go beyond memorizing how government works to understanding why it matters. Through hands-on activities, structured debate, and civic action projects, they practice the skills of active, informed citizenship.

What Students Will Explore

Unit 1

The Origins and Purposes of Government

Origins and purposes of government start with how political power should be distributed in a society. Students trace the ideas that influenced the world's first modern democratic nation, the events that led the colonies to declare independence, and the creation and ratification of the Constitution.

Unit 2

The Organization and Functions of U.S. Government

The framers' distribution of power in the Constitution opens this unit, which is followed by an examination of how power flows through the federal system. Students then study the three branches: what makes an effective legislator, what qualities modern presidents need, and how the judicial system is structured.

Unit 3

The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens

Rights and responsibilities come next, starting with how the Constitution defines and protects individual rights. Students examine how Supreme Court decisions affect the country, then how citizens can make a difference in a democracy.

Unit 4

Political Processes

Political processes cover the influence of parties and interest groups on political decisions. Students also study campaigns and elections, why voting should matter to them, and how much the media shapes political views.

Unit 5

Contemporary Issues in World Affairs

Contemporary world affairs raise the question of how the United States should conduct foreign policy. A second lesson looks at global issues and the role the country plays in addressing them.

Unit 6

Economics in the United States and Beyond

Students explore the roles and responsibilities of U.S. economic institutions and their impact on the national economy.

Reviews & Recognition

At TCI, we don't just say our programs work — we invite independent reviewers to put them to the test. Our social studies and science programs are reviewed by respected third-party organizations that analyze our resources for quality, effectiveness, and alignment with standards.

In addition to national recognition, our programs are reviewed and approved by individual states to ensure they meet specific requirements and standards. We also participate in landscape analyses that compare our offerings with those of other leading programs, so educators and districts can make informed choices.
