What Students Will Explore

Unit 1

The Economic Fundamentals

Economics starts with learning to think like an economist and understanding why you can't always get what you want. Students compare economic systems to see who or what decides what people get, and examine how trade makes people better off.

Unit 2

How Markets Work

Demand and supply are the building blocks here, along with the factors that influence each and how to tell when a price is "right." Students then study market structures and market failures, and what happens when markets do not work perfectly.

Unit 3

Economic Institutions and Organizations

Money, banking, saving, and investing open a unit on the institutions behind the economy, including practical questions about how to spend, save, and invest. Students also study how entrepreneurs use resources to start businesses and why developing human capital matters in the labor market.

Unit 4

Economics of the Public Sector

Government's economic roles are the subject here, beginning with the question of how the U.S. government should carry them out. Students then turn to taxes and taxation, and to who and what should be taxed.

Unit 5

Measuring and Managing the Economy

Measuring economic health is the work of this unit, where students learn how economists gauge the condition of a nation's economy. From there, the focus shifts to how policymakers use fiscal and monetary policy to keep the economy stable.

Unit 6

Globalization and the Global Economy

Globalization brings the program to a close, starting with how countries conduct trade in the global economy and where the United States fits into it. The final lesson asks whether the benefits of globalization outweigh its costs.
