LESSON
Ohio in the United States
It starts in an Ohio attic. Students work as historians with the artifacts they find there, then trace the nation's founding, Ohio's place in the early United States, and the geography, government, and economy that shape the state today.

What Students Will Explore
Unit 1
America Before and After Colonization
Students step into an Ohio attic as historians, asking what its artifacts reveal, then meet the Indigenous peoples who lived in Ohio before colonization. The unit compares the colonial regions and tracks rising tension with Great Britain on an Unrest-O-Meter through the Revolution.
Unit 2
Ohio in the Early United States
Ohio's early years come into view through artifacts that help tell the state's story. Students analyze objects from Ohio after the Revolution and after the Civil War, then plan and present a documentary trailer for the TCI series Ohio Uncovered.
Unit 3
Geography and Ohio
Map skills and a Geography Challenge open the unit on Ohio's geographical features. Students tour the state on a scavenger hunt, use tables and charts to play a game about how geography shaped Ohio's growth, and study how farming has changed in the Midwest.
Unit 4
Civics and Government
Civics and government center on the key features of the U.S. Constitution and the rights the Bill of Rights protects. Students perform mini-dramas about rights violations and study the civic values of early leaders to build a community improvement plan.
Unit 5
Economics and Financial Literacy
Economics closes the program with how the Founding Fathers shaped the economy and how people meet their wants and needs. Students collect images of everyday economics, then analyze money scenarios and build arguments with evidence for the choices they make.
