Social Studies Alive!

New York and Its People

New York was New Netherland first. Students trace the state from its geography and Indigenous groups through revolution, industry, and migration, to the responsibilities citizens carry today.

What Students Will Explore

Unit 1

The Geography and People of New York

New York's geography and people open the program with the state's physical landscape. Students meet the Indigenous groups who lived in New York first, then the early Europeans who arrived and settled there.

Unit 2

New York Grows and the United States Begins

New York grows as the United States begins. Students follow the colony from New Netherland to New York, then turn to the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Unit 3

Governments Are Formed

Governments are formed at three levels, and this unit takes each in turn. Students study the federal government, then New York's state government, then the local government closest to where they live.

Unit 4

New York in the 1800s

New York in the 1800s follows people traveling west and the changes in transportation and communication that carried them. Students also study the fight for people's rights and how the Civil War affected New York.

Unit 5

Industrial Development and Migration

Industry and migration reshape the state in this unit. Two lessons cover industrial development and manufacturing in New York, and a third looks at how the state's population changed over the same period.

Unit 6

New York Today

New York today closes the program with a look at the modern state. A second lesson turns to the responsibilities citizens carry and what they can do where they live.

Reviews & Recognition

At TCI, we don't just say our programs work — we invite independent reviewers to put them to the test. Our social studies and science programs are reviewed by respected third-party organizations that analyze our resources for quality, effectiveness, and alignment with standards.

In addition to national recognition, our programs are reviewed and approved by individual states to ensure they meet specific requirements and standards. We also participate in landscape analyses that compare our offerings with those of other leading programs, so educators and districts can make informed choices.
