Social Studies Alive!

Me and My World

Every learner starts with what they know best: themselves. From there, they observe the people and places around them, making sense of community, belonging, and their world through hands-on discovery.

What Students Will Explore

Unit 1

Introduction: Learning About Myself

Kindergarten begins with the child. Students learn that each person is special and can do many things, then look at what makes a family, including how family members care for one another.

Unit 2

Learning and Working Together

Learning and working together covers getting along by talking, listening, and taking turns. Students learn how to make friends by introducing themselves, sharing, and being kind, and how to solve problems by taking a moment to calm down and thinking of ways to fix them.

Unit 3

Work Now and Long Ago

Being a good helper at school is the focus here in a unit on work, both now and long ago. Students learn what it means to take care of things and to do their own work.

Unit 4

Geography of the Neighborhood

Neighborhood geography starts close to home. Students learn that they live in a neighborhood, name the places in it, and draw a map showing where those places are.

Unit 5

National and State Symbols

National and state symbols begin with location: students learn that they live in a city or town, a state, and a country. A second lesson covers how Americans celebrate.

Unit 6

Reaching Out to Times Past

How people live around the world closes the program. Students learn that people share the same needs but make different choices about wants, and that recycling, reusing, and reducing help take care of the world.

Reviews & Recognition

At TCI, we don't just say our programs work — we invite independent reviewers to put them to the test. Our social studies and science programs are reviewed by respected third-party organizations that analyze our resources for quality, effectiveness, and alignment with standards.

In addition to national recognition, our programs are reviewed and approved by individual states to ensure they meet specific requirements and standards. We also participate in landscape analyses that compare our offerings with those of other leading programs, so educators and districts can make informed choices.
