7th Grade Integrated
Coal turns up where swamps used to be. Students build a model to explain phenomena like that one, revising it as they work through chemistry, Earth science, and life science until it holds.

What Students Will Explore
Integrated Segment 1
Organisms and Nonliving Things Are Made of Atoms
Atoms connect living and nonliving things, opening with coal found where lush swamps once grew. Students work as chemists analyzing materials for a makeup pen, animate the path of a carbon atom through ecosystems, and read rock strata to reconstruct Earth's history.
Integrated Segment 2
Matter Cycles and Energy Flows
Matter cycles and energy flows start with a rose bush that grew faster in the sun than in the shade. Students build an exhibit on Kilauea's volcanic processes, then investigate chemical reactions and design a hot pack for a survival kit.
Integrated Segment 3
The Distribution of Earth's Resources
Earth's resources are unevenly distributed, from dense forest at Yasuni National Park to dry open land at Big Bend. Students sit on a natural resource board weighing three companies, solve a zoo's fish exhibit problem, and explain states of matter to an alien.
Integrated Segment 4
Sustaining Living Systems in a Changing World
Sustaining living systems closes the program with how dams reshape river ecosystems, whether natural or built. Students act as civil engineers siting three bridges against flood, landslide, and earthquake risk, then report as journalists on biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human impact.

Student Materials
-
Reference Text
The Reference Text provides students with rich background knowledge and context to support their science investigations. Engaging text weaves in engineering content that connects directly to Unit Storylines and Anchoring Phenomena, helping students think and work like scientists. Also available in Spanish.
-
Interactive Student Notebook
The print consumable Interactive Student Notebook provides students a place to record observations, graph data, construct arguments, and more during investigations and engineering challenges. Also available in Spanish.
