MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — January 6, 2011 — TCI's online student text for its high school Econ Alive! The Power to Choose program has been approved by the California Learning Resources Network (CLRN) for the third phase [MORE] of the California Digital Textbook Initiative. Reviewers found that TCI materials were in alignment with content standards and met all technology requirements. California's Digital Textbook Initiative was created in June of 2009 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The program was designed to provide high school students and teachers with access to state-approved digital textbooks that meet California's rigorous content standards. In phase three of the initiative, the state opened submissions to commercial products for the first time and also required more interactive technology elements to be included such as video, audio, games and tutorials.
TCI was one of the first providers to submit a commercial program with extensive teacher materials and an interactive online text. Brian Bridges, CLRN's Director said, "Phase Three results prove that high-quality, interactive textbooks are in the pipeline and that publishers are working to create mediarich resources that engage students as they master the content standards."
The Econ Alive! The Power to Choose digital textbook contains online text plus a text-to-audio accessibility feature, a main idea viewer, a text highlighting tool, and creative Reading Challenges. The Reading Challenges allow students to test their comprehension in an engaging, game-like setting, encouraging them to read more. Teachers have immediate access to students' scores so they know how much their students understand and which topics need reinforcement. The student text is accompanied by TeachTCI for teachers which provides teachers with interactive classroom activities and resources that are integrated tightly with the student text.
"As a California company, we're especially delighted that the state is leading the nation with its Digital Textbook Initiative. Econ Alive! The Power to Choose is more than just an online textbook because it integrates classroom activities, interactive Reading Challenges, and an entire teaching philosophy that's about student engagement, not just technology for technology's sake," said Bert Bower, the founder and CEO of TCI. "It's exciting that the state recognizes the value of this approach."
