Unfortunately many students come to you trained to believe history is nothing more than a laundry list of facts, names, and dates to be memorized…
But this quick activity helps students understand and appreciate the challenges historians face as they interpret and communicate the past. It will set the stage for a great year as students realize your class is far more than a place to regurgitate facts–you’re going to bring history alive by challenging students to participate in historical analysis, inquiry, and debate!
One note: I typically taught this lesson at the beginning of the year; however, I’ve also used it mid-year when I wanted to focus on historical perspectives and bias. So use whenever you see fit.
