African Americans at Mid-Century
Chapter 19:

You will examine the African American experience from colonial times through the Civil War by creating a timeline that details the rise and fall of slavery in America. Your timeline will be based on the four sections found on PBS’s Africans in America website: The Terrible Transformation (1450-1750), Revolution (1750-1805), Brotherly Love (1791-1831), and Judgment Day (1831-1865). Each of the four sections contains a historical narrative of the period and a bank of primary resources, documents, and images. Each section of your timeline should include these features:
  • •  a minimum of three key events in the African American experience (for example, the Nat Turner Rebellion)
  • •  one quotation that represents a key event or idea of the time (for example, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison’s words, "I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD")
  • •  at least one simple illustration or visual symbol that represents the period
  • •  color and other creative touches to make it visually appealing
