You will design, illustrate, and write articles for the front
page of the
Jamestown Herald, a 17th century newspaper. You should
address important events and citizens of Jamestown, as well as some aspects of
the colony’s economy. The page should resemble that of a typical daily
newspaper and include the following:
- •
three headlines and lead articles detailing major topics
concerning Jamestown, with each article two to three paragraphs in
length
- •
a three-paragraph personal profile of one of the important
citizens of Jamestown
- •
two advertisements for businesses that might have operated in
colonial Jamestown
- •
correct grammar and spelling
Use the websites below as resources:
Start with the
Colonial
National Historic Park. This National Park Service site offers some of
the best information on the first English settlement in the Americas. The
Jamestown Fact Sheets section should give you ideas and information
for your stories, personal profile, and advertisements.
If you need additional information, consult
Virtual Jamestown, a Virginia Center for Digital History project that
contains primary source material, maps, and images.
Another helpful site is
JamesQuest, produced by the Curry School of Education at the University
of Virginia. This site has access to various resources dealing with Native
Americans in Virginia, slavery, and religion in Jamestown.
