Since 1989, TCI has created curricular materials that thoughtfully integrate social studies with language arts content and skill development. Through the TCI Approach, developed by teachers who merged educational research with the realities of classroom teaching, we have helped Illinois teachers revitalize their social studies programs.

In order to develop higher-level reading skills and promote literacy, TCI lessons set a purpose for reading. Social Studies Alive! and History Alive! programs employ a lesson cycle that includes engaging preview assignments, classroom activities that tap students’ multiple intelligences, reading notes that utilize graphic organizers, and processing activities that challenge students to apply what they have learned, allowing students to create deep content memory.
